Automakers often auction the first production example of a new model for charity, but this one is quite special. It’s the first official US-bound Civic Type R ever, and it’s listed for auction at Bring a Trailer.
The full selling price of the Type R plus Bring a Trailer’s five-percent auction fee will be donated to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. After the auction closes, the winning bidder will get this car shipped to their local Honda dealer.
This car is incredibly significant because it’s not just the first US-bound example of the new Civic Type R, it’s the first one to ever officially make its way over here. Honda has sold Civic Type Rs in Japan and Europe for a number of years, but only now, it’s decided to bring this hot hatch to the US. This particular car is historic.
This Type R is painted in Aegean Blue, which contrasts nicely with the various red accents. Honda has fit the Type R with a 306-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual gearbox. Running a sub-7:50 lap at the Nurburgring, the Type R recently took the crown as the fastest front-wheel drive car at the Nordschliefe.
The Civic Type R apparently carries an MSRP of $33,900, but with bidding already up to $22,000 at the time of writing, we expect this will cost much more. Reasonably so, given this car’s historic importance.
